Series 2: Sifu Master Teacher Father

Father’s Day in the United States is on Sunday June 18, 2017.

Do you have a teacher or mentor that you admire as a father figure?

I would like to share with you a Chinese proverb that says when someone teaches you or mentors you for a day, you respect him as a father for a lifetime.

You’ll also learn that the words sifu or shifu literally mean teacher, shi, and father, fu.

The Chinese proverb is 一日為師,終身為父 (yī rì wéi shī, zhōng shēn wèi fù).

Literally, these words mean  一日 (yī rì, a day) 為 (wéi, as) 師 (shī, teacher),終身 (zhōng shēn, a lifetime) 為 (wèi, as) 父 (fù, father).

It has been translated in many ways:

  • Once a teacher, always respected as a father.
  • A day as a teacher, a lifetime held in esteem as a father.
  • Respect your teacher as you do your father.
  • Students should always respect their teachers as much as they respect their fathers.
  • A teacher for a day is to be respected as a father for a lifetime.
  • Even if someone is your teacher for only a day, you should regard him like your father for the rest of your life.
  • A day as a teacher; a lifetime as a father.
  • A teacher for a day is a father for a lifetime.
  • One should respect a teacher as if the teacher were his or her own father through a lifetime, even if the student-teacher relationship has existed for only a day.
  • He who teaches me for one day is my father for life.
  • He who teaches me for one day may be considered my father-figure for life.
  • We should sincerely respect a teacher.
When you combine teacher, 師 (shī, teacher), and father, 父 (fù, father), they become 師父 (shī fù), commonly known as sifu or shifu in English.

If you’re a sifu, this proverb can serve as a reminder that your responsibility as a teacher is huge. Your commitment to teach someone for a day is as important as being a father that nurtures and teaches a son or a daughter for a lifetime.

Introducing “Warrior Banner” Series 2: Sifu Master Teacher Father

To celebrate this Father’s Day in the U.S. and many different upcoming Father’s Days around the world, we’ve also designed a kit with a large banner and 24 buttons: “Warrior Banner” Series 2: Sifu Master Teacher Father.

It’s called “Warrior Banner” because our series of banners are inspired by the minimalist design of the traditional banners that samurai once carried. We love to create inspirational banners using simple colors and meaningful characters that can be displayed indoors or outdoors.

Form:

Banner: The banner is 24” w x 72” h (61 cm x 182 cm) including 2” top and bottom pole pockets. It’s intentionally large to be visually impactful. It’s printed in matte to prevent glare and on heavy-duty 13 oz. scrim vinyl for durability.
Button: Included in this kit are 12 pin-back and 12 magnetic buttons. Each button is 2.2” (56 mm) in diameter.
Symbolism: The background color of the banner is Rich Black in CMYK to represent a black belt. All characters together form an 18” w x 34.2 h (46 cm x 87 cm) area which has the same proportions (10:19) as the U.S. flag. The characters are white, except for 師 (shī, teacher) and 父 (fù, father), which are printed in approximation of gold to highlight sifu.

Function:

To Celebrate Father’s Day and Teachers’ Day: It’s designed for year-round display, but especially for weeks leading to and after Father’s Day and Teachers’ Day. See a list of Father’s Days and Teachers’ Days at the bottom of this page and in Wikipedia.
To Create a Sense of Participation: Get some color Sharpies or white markers and encourage your students to sign their names on the banner for future remembrance and to give everyone a sense of participation. Make it an annual Father’s Day and Teachers’ Day tradition!
To Appreciate: You can also present the banner with students’ signatures to a beloved instructor as a giant appreciation banner. Let’s appreciate teachers, instructors, mentors, and fathers in our life. The intention and actual expression of gratitude, no matter how long or how much someone had taught us, is good for everyone’s souls.
To Always Be Interesting: People are good at noticing new things. When you display a new and visually interesting banner, during open house or recess time some students or visitors might take pictures or selfies to share with their friends. It’s a positive exposure and influence for you.
To Always Have Something to Give: Pin-back and magnetic buttons are included so you always have something to give. We’ll personalize each button by printing your name or your school’s name on the edge of the button. All letters will be converted to upper case. There are character limits for this, but just enter whatever you want and our designers will personally review it and make it work. If requested, we can show you a preview before we make the buttons so you’ll have a chance to give us feedback.

Price:

The price for this kit is $150. The banner is made of a durable vinyl material that will last 5 to 10 years and likely longer. Over time, the cost is actually just $10 or so a year.

Limited-time Batch Price:
